Section 5: Research laboratory

The fifth section, "research laboratory", recreates a typical laboratory from the turn of the 19th century. Such a laboratory, similar to the Mittasch laboratory, was the birthplace of the successful development of the new high-pressure technology.
Bosch’s success was based on the cooperation of several colleagues. One of his closest co-workers was Alwin Mittasch, the team’s leading chemist. As head of the laboratory, Mittasch was also responsible for the development of the catalysts. However, engineer Franz Lappe was in charge of the technical development.
The desire for an increase in crop yields was the driving force behind the technical synthesis of ammonia. Yet agricultural application was not always the main reason for the search of nitrogen compounds. The production of nitrogen compounds for war purposes had a much older tradition.
